Baited Bear Hunting

Our bear hunting is all in Wisconsin zone A1 and our day camp is just 10 minutes from Hayward, Wisconsin. The area we hunt is a nice mixture of rolling hardwood forest laced with small creek bottoms and the large cedar swamps and potholes that bear love.

We begin our baiting season in May during the breeding season when bear are most active. Early baits are placed over a large area of both public and private land. Boars passing the area will remember the bait location for months, giving us the chance for a return visit later in the season. As we get closer to the season, we pull the outlying baits and draw the bear into a more concentrated area of private land. The closer we get to the September season, the more regular we become in our baiting pattern until we are refreshing baits every day. By the time the season opens we have a pretty good idea which baits are being hit regularly.

Since bear are generally most active during the cool hours of the day, our day camp is always available for your use during the rest of the day. Or, if you prefer, we can arrange a fishing trip on the Chippewa Flowage.

We try to locate our archery stands within about 15 yards of the bait and about 15 feet above the ground. We use large, comfortable tree stands or custom built platforms accessed by strap on ladders. For gun hunters or anyone interested in photography, we are a little more flexible with stand locations and may have several stands around a hot bait to take advantage of sight lines or eliminate wind (scent) considerations. We’ll be happy to discuss other options with you if you are unable to use our usual stands.

You’re welcome to join us any time you can during the summer months to learn the baiting process and to get comfortable with your stand locations. Greg’s Guide Services will also field dress your kill and help you choose a local taxidermist if desired.
